Sam Garwood

Cinematographer


London-based, Sam started shooting after a long career assisting on features, commercials, TV dramas and music videos all over the world. He has worked in the film industry since 1983, starting as a runner with The Comic Strip and on "My Beautiful Laundrette".

A full CV is obtainable below, or from the link on the left. Sam worked as 2nd Unit Director of Photography on Clare Kilner's Feature "The Wedding Date" for DoP Oliver Curtis BSC. He also shot 2nd Unit on David Thewlis's debut Feature "Cheeky" for DoP Oliver Stapleton BSC, as well as operating 'B' Camera. Films still in post-production include "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" (Oliver Stapleton BSC), and "Boogie Woogie" (John Mathieson BSC).

Recently-completed shorts are "LIFE:XP" for Justin Trefgarne and Michael Rymer's "Sick". Previously Sam shot "Chain Male", for Christin Cockerton, "Count Backwards from Ten" for Finlay Robertson, "The Wake" for Kieron Hawkes, "The Dummy" for Heidi Bartlett, and "Hot Dog" for Crispin Whittell. "The Dummy" was chosen by the British Society of Cinematographers to screen at its New Film-Makers Night in May 2004.

Sam was also Cameraman on Marco Brambilla's "Wall of Death" project and earlier in his career he was Camera Operator on the cult hit "The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz" (DoP: Julian Court), and focus puller on the Nicole Kidman film "Birthday Girl" (DoP: Oliver Stapleton), the black comedy "Buffalo Soldiers" (also Oliver Stapleton) starring Joaquin Phoenix, and the Borneo-set drama "The Sleeping Dictionary" (DoP: Martin Fuhrer BSC), with Bob Hoskins and Brenda Blethyn, shot over three months in the rain forests of Sarawak. He was B Camera focus puller on Robert de Niro's feature "The Good Shepherd", with DoP Robert Richardson ASC.
